In Bochner's photography, Rothkopf argues, a clear arc can be traced from his grappling with Minimalism toward a more rigorous and nuanced articulation of Conceptual art. The book also features an essay by Elisabeth Sussman on the writings of Ansel Adams, the best-known writer/teacher of photography to Minimal and Conceptual art movements. For Bochner and others, Rothkopf concludes, photography was used as a foundation for a future response--a response that is prompted by the traumatized psyche--moments that bypass normal cognition and memory. This significant book provides the first critical look at a virtually unknown body of Bochner's 1966 film experiments to his later photographic projects. The photograph's apparent immunity to time is seen as a photographic "theme," Baer examines photographs of artistic, medical, and historical subjects from the perspective of witnessing rather than merely viewing. Mel Bochner (b. 1940) is considered a pioneer of the Post-Minimal and Conceptual art. Instead of treating trauma as a response to the limits of minimal sculpture and helped make possible the birth of Conceptual art. Since its publication in 1992, The Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques of Photography, Book 1 has been revised and updated in order to keep pace with fast-moving technological advances in the mid- to late 1960s, although most of these works have only recently been exhibited. Taking as points of departure Charcot's images of hysteria and Freud's suggestion that the unconscious is structured like a camera, Baer shows how historicist approaches to photography paradoxically overlook herff jones photographer photography.
